    good job

  4. Jessie Price on 25 September, 2012 at 4:02 pm

The worst thing about completing a survey is that it makes you stop and think about the questions you don’t want to think about like ‘do you have an exit plan?’. Good survey.

    • Caroline on 25 September, 2012 at 5:02 pm

That is I think one of the hidden benefits of doing the survey… Plus there’s always a little spur of competition when you see what the highest turnover is or the types of services which are earning top dollar!

  5. Genny Davidson Smith on 26 September, 2012 at 8:44 am

Good survey. Really looking forward to becoming involved with the VA community. It’s lonely on your own & it’ll be good to bounce ideas off others. Always stronger together, even when you are independent.

  6. Kerry Field on 26 September, 2012 at 9:41 am

    Fantastic survey Caroline.

It did make me think and in particular I don’t have an exit plan like Jessie above. Definitely need one!

    Look forward to the results.

  7. Gillian Barker on 27 September, 2012 at 9:21 am

Just about to become a VA so I am interested in the survey results.

  8. Debby Marcy on 27 September, 2012 at 10:27 am

Well that was a very interesting exercise! I will be interested in the results and what insights it gives on our business and trends.

  9. Debby Marcy on 27 September, 2012 at 10:28 am

Well that was an interesting exercise! I will be very interested to see what insights it gives and also trends in our business.

  10. Marilyn Emery on 28 September, 2012 at 9:31 am

A very interesting survey, definitely made me think about what I am doing and how I can do it better – cant wait for the results!

  11. Sajid on 28 September, 2012 at 3:33 pm

Very interesting survey and am really looking forward to seeing the results.

  13. Brenda Pyne on 1 October, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Definitely an interesting set of questions – made me think!

  14. Tracey on 2 October, 2012 at 7:39 pm

“As a percentage of your turnover, what amount of your work is outsourced to associates?*”
This question won’t let me select zero. I currently don’t have any associates. As it is a required field, it won’t let me continue with the questionnaire without an answer… πŸ™

    • Caroline on 4 October, 2012 at 9:13 am

Put 1 and I’ll make a note of it – sorry for the glitch! We always have a few!

  15. Sandy Hearn on 3 October, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Great questions and although in the early stages, am loving my new found niche! I especially love the team spirit within this industry, although alone day to day there is so much support out there. Long may it continue. Looking forward to seeing the results.

    • Caroline on 4 October, 2012 at 9:06 am

Absolutely – outsiders are often shocked by how much the VA industry helps one another, but in reality we’re only helping ourselves as an industry, there is more than enough work for everyone!

  16. Emma on 10 October, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Hi, can you tell me when the results will be published? I am in the process of writing my business plan and would really like to use the most up-to-date survey results in my market research section! Thank you.

    • Caroline on 10 October, 2012 at 1:12 pm

It depends how quickly we reach 10% of the UK industry – that’s the magic number which makes the research statistically valid and robust enough to even out any freak anomalies. We’re hoping to get it all sorted by Xmas, but the old research is just as valid. Year on year we don’t see massive changes in things like company status, price, turnover or services offered, but you’ll maybe get a new service being introduced or a specific gadget being used by VAs. (I could of course be wrong and get a huge surprise, but having done it for several years it tends to be a more gradual swing rather than shock results!)

      • Steph Middleton on 24 October, 2012 at 11:10 am

out of interest Caroline, do you know what 10% of the industry is? Do we know how many VAs there actually are as the industry seems to be growing so quickly?

        • Caroline on 24 October, 2012 at 12:57 pm

We can only go from the SVA membership, as it’s not a paid for resource most people will join, although obviously within that you’ll have non-active VAs who are either newbies or have retired from the industry (we do try to clear them out as much as possible, but it’s not always terribly effective!). Currently we have 1,178 on our books.

  17. Tracy Searle aka Valued Angel on 10 October, 2012 at 6:58 pm

  18. Andrea Webb, Distinctive Assistants on 17 October, 2012 at 5:45 pm

Looking forward to seeing the results.

  23. Jo Tompkins on 3 November, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Hi, I have just completed. Difficult to answer many questions accurately as I have only just started and have just one client. Location field needs more areas!

    Look forward to results.

    Thanks, Jo

  26. Claire White on 21 November, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Hi Caroline, there was no option for South Yorkshire in the counties list so I put that I was in West Yorkshire as it’s nearest. I have a team of 8 and continue to grow and I’d love to network with business owners who run teams. Do you have a specific group for that or do you know of any? I found the survey really thought provoking and it would be really useful if you could print the results off. Many thanks, Claire πŸ˜€

    • Caroline on 21 November, 2012 at 1:00 pm

As far as I know there isn’t one, but perhaps there should be! I might include that in next year’s Big Meet Event – so keep an eye out.

And thank you for the little glitch advice, there are always a few and we do aim to iron them out as much as possible.

      • Claire White on 21 November, 2012 at 1:20 pm

Thanks, I’ll watch out for it πŸ˜€

        • Terri Homyard on 14 September, 2014 at 5:23 pm

          Hi Claire,

I’m from South Yorkshire too (Sheffield) πŸ˜€

  27. Carol on 21 November, 2012 at 3:23 pm

    Thanks, Carol

  28. Caroline Daniels on 22 November, 2012 at 9:28 am

Just completed the survey again this year. I was surprised at how much my business has grown over the last year. Your survey certainly made me sit back and look at what I’ve done and what needs to be done!

  29. Heather Siverns on 4 January, 2013 at 4:11 pm

Just completed the survey, good questions.
I’m also in South Yorkshire but had to put West, can South have a field next year please?

  30. Vee on 22 August, 2014 at 1:40 pm

I can’t seem to get past the first question! Hitting next doesn’t do anything for me. I’ve tried both Chrome and Firefox.

    • Vee on 22 August, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Aha, after I posted this comment it allowed me to carry on. Maybe you have to be logged in?
All complete. Looking forward to the results.

  31. Marj Massie on 22 August, 2014 at 3:49 pm

Well done Caroline. Some questions there I had to think about. Will be interesting to see the results.

  32. Gwen Backhouse on 25 October, 2014 at 12:15 pm

  33. Emma on 2 April, 2015 at 11:32 am

Hi, I’m interested in becoming a VA and would like to know if the survey results for the last few years are published on the website anywhere in order to get some ideas and possibly answer questions I currently have?
    Thanks
    Emma

  36. Clare on 30 March, 2016 at 6:46 pm

I’ve just completed this survey – look forward to seeing the results – where will they be published out of interest?

    • Caroline on 8 April, 2016 at 11:42 am

Hi Clare – depends a lot on how long it takes us to gather all the results!

  37. Janet Walker on 30 March, 2016 at 7:03 pm

Hi Caroline. An email from my yahoo – non-business – email just bounced back so please let me know if you didn’t get it. Please note for good reasons I said ‘decreased’ when I should have said ‘increased’ profit for the year I was reporting on! Sorry, J.

  38. Carole Meyrick on 25 April, 2016 at 3:51 pm

Done it – again! Hope you get it this time. Please let me know if you don’t.

  39. Jane Oriel on 26 April, 2016 at 9:24 am

Hello. I completed the survey from my phone last night but there was no change of page after I pressed submit, or a confirmation email. This means you will either have received multiple sends from me or it didn’t get though. Would you be able to let me know please because I’ll do it again from my laptop if it didn’t arrive. Thanks.

  40. Heather Greig on 26 April, 2016 at 10:49 am

Just completed the survey Caroline – looking forward to seeing the results.

  41. Bryony Parker on 1 June, 2016 at 12:57 pm

I really need to do more marketing, when I see some VA’s with lots of subcontractors is makes me realize how bad I am at marketing.

    • Caroline on 2 June, 2016 at 10:43 am
