My husband has decided he would like to buy me a new laptop tomorrow as the one we have is quite old and can be very slow. Who am I to complain?! Anyway, I just wondered if anyone knows what we need to look for when buying a new laptop i.e. memory size etc. Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks

I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 as a back-up when my desktop computer had problems and I had to use a loan machine whilst mine was being rebuilt.
I'm very pleased with it. Only niggle when buying from Dell is that they load Dell rubbish on it for you, so you have to remove the software if you don't want it. Good prices, and they always have special offers on the web. I found it best to order on-line as otherwise you speak to "Bangalore" and communication can require a lot of patience.
Hope this helps. _________________ Carole Meyrick

I use a Dell Inspiron 1150 and its been great - it does what it says on the tin/box lol
I would suggest buying online from Dell, as it works out a lot cheaper and you can sometimes get extras included such as an extra battery/more memory. _________________ Lyndsey Gilchrist

Thanks everyone. My husband and I spent a great deal of time yesterday speaking to everyone we can think of who has some sort of expertise in IT! Main feedback we had was that Vista is not a good option at the moment although best to get something which is Vista compatible for when all the bugs are sorted and to have at least 1GB memory. Not much else is extremely important for what I need to use it for apart from things like size if I want to be portable etc. Problem is most the PC World type of shops come with Vista already loaded rather than XP so we have been advised to either buy off the internet, somewhere like Dell or www.misco.co.uk or to buy it with Vista and load XP on it.
So much to think about but not sure we will actually be buying it today after all!

There are still numerous laptops with XP available. A quick google will get you this.
I would recommend that you ensure you get a minmimum of 1Gb RAM, and a decent sized hard drive (100Gb+ is good). Also be careful which processor you are being offered - an Intel Dual Core is a good option.
If you buy this spec or greater, then when Vista is sorted you will be able to upgrade to it.
Let me know if you want any further information, or some links to where to buy lappies from, etc.
Regards
M. |

Thanks again for your help M. Think we are going to buy from Dell now. We have been given a contact name/number by a friends brother in law who works in IT. He's also given us a spec to ask for so will see how we get on with them. Thanks for your help.

Hi Mark
I have had some quotes sent to me for Dell Inspirion 6400 and 1501. Do you know anything about how good or bad these are? Do you also know of other places I could look to compare prices please?
Many thanks
