Hi, I currently work part time and am looking into setting up my own VA business (after toying with the idea for about a year and doing nothing!). I am currently researching what it is I would like to offer and the more I look into it the more excited I become of setting up my own business. However I have a few questions so here goes!

With regards to a website, would you advise using Wordpress or is there some other way which is better? My knowledge regarding setting up websites is limited.

I am considering offering proof reading and taking a course. Has anyone else taken a proof reading course and if so can they recommend a provider for this?

Also I believe I have read somewhere that it is Global VA week later this month and there is a VA meet up in my area. As I have not actually set up yet and am looking for advice on setting up, contacts etc do you think this is something I would be able to attend?

I look forward to hearing from you. Clare

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on starting up as a VA.

The best person to speak to about the VA week (next week) is Angela Dawson - she is setting up the meeting. You should be able to contact her via twitter http://twitter.com/@adm1ndoctor or her website http://www.theadmindoc.co.uk/

I'm in the middle of doing a proofreading course with the Publishing Training Centre which was recommended to me after I did a one-day course run by the Society for Editors and Proofreaders. Just finished the first unit out of five. I'm quite enjoying it, but couldn't say yet whether it will lead to work as that is a way off for now.

Thanks Dawn. I will contact Amanda as suggested. Thanks Petra - I had looked at that course so will look into it further.

Many thanks

Hi Clare

It's Angela (not Amanda).

Hi Clare

I recently set up as a VA in Yorkshire (I'm in Leeds), and I'm finding there's a lot of very friendly VAs in York and Leeds and I've even met one in Scarborough. :)

We try to meet up in York once a month - if that's somewhere you can get to easily (I don't know how far "north" you are?) then you'd be welcome - I've popped a post into Meetings section (I like to promote them as I love meeting new people!) Very Happy

Best wishes on your new venture - working for yourself is the best feeling! :)

I'm a new VA in Leyburn, North Yorkshire and just wondered how you were getting on?

You guys should do a Yorkshire meet up for Global VA Week (13-19 May) - more info here:
http://www.societyofvirtualassistants.co.uk/2013/02/11/global-va-week-13-19-may/

also might be worth speaking to Helen of IntelligentVA as she sometimes hosts these VA events too!
