The wonderful world of SEO!

I've been learning this week and trying to bring my page from page7 #8 which is where it started this week forward a bit.

So best place to go for current SEO I presumed was Google itself, I've implemented a few things, posted 2 new blogs this week, rich with my keywords and checked this morning, and I've been knocked down to page 8 #10.

All I did was give my current pages keywords, I have the All in 1 SEO plugin for my wordpress site. And submit the site index using the webmaster tools.

I'm not sure why this made my site drop!

:S

Hi,
Don't be too disheartened - it won't have been your work which has actively made your site drop, the reason being that most likely your competitors have increased their own ranking, bringing you down a little! It's only been a few days, I wouldn't worry - these things take time, keep on going and you will hopefully start to notice the benefits :). If you would like any help on SEO I'm happy to give some advice.

Yup - it depends very much what everyone else is doing. You could spend ££££s and hours on every SEO trick in the book and then someone else comes along in 2 weeks time and outdoes you.

Also are you sure the words you are optimising for are actually going to get you cash? i.e. "virtual assistant" is pretty competitive because you're competing with every VA worldwide, but most likely won't be as effective as a search term at getting you business as "virtual assistant <your>".

Google's main aim is to serve up relevant search results for people, so to an extent they don't want you to optimise for a specific search term - they only want to send people to your site if it's what they are looking for.

At one point we were on page 1 for "virtual assistant" - it was a pain in the butt TBH as the enquiries we got were all from people in USA wanting a VA for $2/hour!!!

Much better to target either your location/skill.

By targeting your local area, you're also focusing on those searchers who are in the 'ready to buy' phase of their search, they are searching more in depth. 'virtual assistant', not only is it more competitive, but these types of searchers are more likely to be in the 'research' phase of their searching, gaining background knowledge, having a general look around.

Once they start focusing in on a specific area or more targeted search phrase - this shows they are more serious rather than general browsing.

As well as location look at other longer tail keywords such as virtual assistant + (your niche)

Great advice there Laura and I hadn't even considered the difference in the mentality of the 'ready to buy' customer but it's so true! I'm off to sort out my keywords right now...!

And also you're less likely to get those annoying "I want to work from home but have no skills and don't want to invest any time or money" requests which plague me......
